Pigmentation and Sunspots

What Is Pigmentation?

As we get older many of us begin to see pigmentation appearing on our skin in the form of epidermal (superficial) pigmentation or deeper pigmentation in the dermal layer.

Excessive skin pigmentation can be from a number of causes including UV exposure, hormones, skin trauma and genetic predisposition.

Epidermal pigmentation types are usually close to the surface of the skin and are induced by sun exposure. You may hear them called solar lentigos, freckles, sunspots, brown spots or liver spots.

Dermal pigmentation sits deeper in the skin cell layers, a common form of this is melasma often induced by hormones.

These types of pigmentation can make our skin feel uneven, tired or blotchy and we can spend unnecessary time trying to cover them up.

Depending on your skin type and your specific type of pigmentation condition one or more of the following treatments maybe recommended.
